A Merry Beginning
By Dorothy Creamer
For many, Christmas is a time of traditions and the advent of customary seasonal acts. Families begin the ritualistic decorating dance. Boxes are brought down from the attic or unearthed from storage. The same ornaments, knick-knacks and decorations are ceremoniously unwrapped and put on display in the same way that they are every year. That's part of the joy of the holidays...revisiting time-honored festivities and, to some degree, rejoicing in the unchanged.

Of course, each season new trends emerge and fresh items get interspersed with classics. This is how I look at myself having the honor of stepping in as editor of Selling Christmas Decorations.

As insiders, you understand all too well the need to keep things innovative and updated. Finding that balance between maintaining traditions and twists to propel sales is a key factor for every season. I hope to strike that chord by bringing you the most up-to-date information from all corners of the market as well as insight into where the industry is heading.

With manufacturers and buyers playing it safe as the nation battles its way out of an economic downturn, traditional themes have emerged as the strong trend. This month's cover story, "Tree Themes & Holiday Schemes" illustrates how classic decor is driving sales, but suppliers and retailers are still finding ways to stylize timeless concepts.

Despite a cautious atmosphere, suppliers seem hopeful that 2010 will inspire people to finally relax their safe spending and be ready to celebrate. This issue we learn from Wayne Bronner of Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland that his store has more visitors than ever, but they are simply watching what they spend. "They tend to buy the lower-priced items, but we have always done well in that sector," Bronner explains in "A Reason for the Season."

Of course, no matter how challenging the financial outlook is for the country, Christmas decorations must be a constant in a retail environment. In "Merchants Making Merry" I had the chance to get insight into the commercial decor sector and how important it is for stores to present a festive mood.

You might notice that SCD is boasting a revamped look itself. Our talented art directors have worked their magic to design an exciting fresh logo and layout. I look forward to getting your feedback on our new style. After all...'tis the season for change!
